Hideo Kobayashi is talking about Bergson’s critique, but I once again recall the meaning of the words that he speaks and what I have thought about and created as an artist in the past. Are there things about me that changed and did not change in the time leading up to the present? What have I seen, thought, and given form to?

Have I been smiling?

My existence is in between this land and sky. While in between land and sky, I have been conscious of my experiences and actions and handled extremely personal affairs in my creations. It is possible that they are things that anyone experiences similarly and the more common they are, the more they pass by without being sensed. It seems that I am doing to these affairs something similar to scooping up water with my hands.

It is possible that I may have been smiling.

The reason that I have been able to continue my creations up until now may lie in that. I will continue to be interested in trivial affairs and think about things that are visible and invisible. Pieces that I presented here 16 years ago, alongside things that took shape after experiences that I had after then. I will continue to exist in between land and sky and from now on, I will likely be conscious of smiling as well.

Spring 2021
Masatoshi Mori

biography

1973 Born in Chiba prefecture
1996 Graduated from Rissho University Faculty of Buddhism, Department of Buddhism 1998~2005 Ryuji Miyamoto Assistant
1999~2005 Hiroshi Osaka Assistant
2004~ lecturer at Kyoto University of Art and Design Photography Course
2014~2018 Lecturer, Painting Area, Department of Fine Arts, Tokyo Zokei University

exhibitions

1997 [ photographs ] / Akasaka, Tokyo
2006 TIME & STYLE EXISTENCE / Aoyama, Tokyo
2006 SPHERE TIME & STYLE HOME / Jiyugaoka, Tokyo Masatoshi Mori・sphere
+Yasuyoshi Botan・Talk to the other side TAP Satelite Gallery / Toride, Ibaraki Toride Art Project 2006 participation
2010 FOREST TIME & STYLE ISETAN SHINJUKU / Shinjuku, Tokyo 2012 BRANCH TIME & STYLE ISETAN SHINJUKU / Shinjuku, Tokyo 2016 BRACKISH WATERS VOID+ / Aoyama, Tokyo
2018【bə’ːrd】 reset button / Nishiogikubo, Tokyo
2019 “Seizing the day” omonmatent / Toride, Ibaraki Born in Chiba prefecture in 1973.I study photography on my own.Assistant Ryuji Miyamoto and Assistant Hiroshi Osaka.Since 2004, I have been a part-time lecturer at the Department of Photography, Kyoto University of Art and Design.BRACKISH WATERS(2106)、 【bə’ːrd】(2018)、 “Seizing the day”(2019)

From Thursday, April 1, 2021
Time & Style Atmosphere (Minami Aoyama store)
4-27-15 Minami Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Tel: 03-5464-3205
Business hours: 11: 00-19: 00 Regular holiday: Wednesday

“Smiling is the joy of living.” A sentence in a book I had just been reading catches my attention.
